If you're sitting in a cockpit and directing the mecha using a control
panel, I don't see how species-compatibility does anything for you.
OTOH, if the control system is such that you're effectively wearing or
becoming the mecha (either through one of the battlesuit control
systems described in GURPS Mecha or by means of a neural interface of
some sort), a case could be made that a species-compatible mecha is
going to be easier to learn how to operate than a pillbox-on-treads.
Mind you, the +3 skill bonus for species compatibility doesn't strike
me as the right way to go; rather, I'd be inclined to treat the
vehicle operation skillas an Easy skill in these cases - which, for
the same amount of training, ought to be good for at least an extra
level of proficiency.
