Hello everybody, I have some very provisional numbers for 3E TL12. I might call it a "recon starfighter", and the others would be a "patrol starfighter" for convoy escort, a "strike starfighter" for planetary attack, and a "battle starfighter" for space superiority. This is a difference from real-world aircraft, where fighters are smaller than bombers.
* The recon starfighter is 100 tons, with 800 tons thrust and 800 tons hypershunt rating. There are has three individual cabins, so hot-bunking allow up six to nine people. Core crew is three. * Offensive weaponry is 10 tons -- a heavy autolauncher with sixteen 1,000-lb. missiles. * Defensive weaponry is approx. 2 tons, depending what you count as part of the CIWS mount. 4.5 MJ x-ray laser with extreme range option, RoF 16*, 6d*9(2) imp, Acc 26, 1/2D 48,000, Max 144,000 in an atmosphere, 8,200 miles in vacuum. A robotic, high-capacity mainframe (DX 12, IQ 12) with C9 gunner skill program (40 points, skill 18) and +10 targeting. If it can aim, skill is 18 + 18 + 10 + 2 (active targeting) = 48. Engaging a half-ton missile at long range, SM is +1, and 7,000 miles are -39, so it would be effective skill 9 -- and a miss by 1 still hits with one round out of the burs, so there are even chances that it will kill a missile moving a few thousand mps at a few flight seconds distance. Without aiming, things look much bleaker. skill is 30, again with SM+1 and an effective +1 for burst fire, so the odds are just one in four at 15 miles. Point defense kills one missile every two turns, no more, unless atmospheric trails allow walking the burst. Summarized, offense is roughly twice as effective per ton as defense, if I can get a workable hyperspace missile at 1,000 lbs. My draft starfighter needs another couple of CIWS, but even so battleships don't pay. Any comments, or mistakes in my numbers or rules?
