Hello Folks,
For a long time, I've struggled with trying to match real life statistics
with that of GURPS VEHICLE design statistics, and having little luck matching
the two together. It looks however, as though I've found a correlation between
real world statistics and the design rules given in GURPS VEHICLES.

GURPS VEHICLES used the concept that a displacement ton was equal to about 35
cubic feet of water. While looking up Builder's Old Measurement in WIKIPEDIA,
I stumbled across this pertinent piece of information:

Deadweight = Length x Beam x Beam/2 all divided by 94.

That is the same tonnage formula I found in another book that determines the
tonnage of a ship in tons burthen. What I didn't know, was that this formula
assumes that the ship's burden would be 3/5 of its displacement.

When I tried my hand a designing age of sail craft using GURPS VEHICLES, I
ended up having to use a figure of roughly 70 cubic feet per displacement ton
instead of the recommended 35 cubic feet per displacement ton. Now, with this
formula, I can use the inverse of 3/5 to determine what the cubic feet value of
the hull should be. In this case, 1.67. So, instead of 70 cubic feet as I had
tried using for a time before giving up in disgust, the value of 5/3 x 35 would
have worked better. Net result was 58.33 cubic feet per tons burthen.

Just thought I'd share this with the list.

             Hal
