Hello Hal, the problem is in the relation between total hull volume and normal vehicle displacement. A short ton of (fresh) water is about 32 cf, if I get my maths right. So the 35 cf figure is for a ship loaded almost to the gunwales. Going from displacement to deadweight brings another major fudge factor, since different ship types have different hull and engine percentages. I've seen similar formulas relating weight to depth in the hold -- like your formula, this assumes a standard shape, scaled to different sizes.
