Does the ship eed to be streamlined for space travel? Warp, jump, warp gate or normal space? If it needs to be streamlined then a girder or like might not be the best but ... it sure makes adding cargo and removing it alot easier.. Sort of the reverse of current container ship, or just instead of cargo containers inside, they are outside connected to the ships grid work/main spine or spokes going out from the spine.. Cargo inspections might be harder, but .. The patron who packaged up the cargo container is the one who certifies that what is in it, is what is in it, its manifest and all..

But then you might have a MRI or like device to scan the whole container to make sure its bulk engine parts and not illegal immigrants, illegal biomatter or nuclear/bio-chemical weapons or like..

Typically it's a question of 'does the cargo require expensive surface features or other equipment to protect it during transit, which are not needed before loading and after unloading'. If so, it may be more economical to attach those surface features to the transport (which will re-use them) than to the cargo containers. Otherwise, all you need is a framework to hold the cargo in place. FTL ships frequently require a jump grid or something similar. In the extreme case you have lighter aboard ship designs, where the cargo is contained in its own space ship (typically one that can go places the main ship can't, such as into atmosphere).
