Drake is mixing different historical memes -- the politics
a bit like ancient Rome, while the social mix on the ship
more like the age of Napoleon (or Nelson).

That makes it difficult to talk about corvette and cruiser
classes -- cruiser was a mission, not a ship.

I was thinking of civilian ships. Writing military ships is
more difficult, because the specifics of the FTL rules make
a bigger difference. And it is hard to guess where you are
in the arms race -- is the 100,000-ton ship a destroyer, a
heavy cruiser, or a dreadnought?

Good idea.
