How many people drive cross-country in an RV? There are also those that make similar trips in a sedan or even a coupe.
If the journey is of a similar duration and the propulsion+life support takes a similar proportion of the available volume, I can easily see hopping in a va, mini-van, or even a sedan for a 3-5 hour drive to the next state/system. Make this a cheap proposition, and you have families going to visit grandma every other month or the like. Then again, I personally have experience having a family of 8 drive from Texas to Ohio then Illinois, and finally back to Texas during the winter break every few years to visit grandparents, all in an 8 passenger van, so a few days in a small vehicle is hardly outside of what people are doing now, even for pleasure trips.
