Wasn't Diesel originally trying to develop an engine to run on Coal Dust when he invented the original mechanism for the "Diesel" engine?

IOW, (a) Coal Dust would probably be a lot easier to design an automatic feed mechanism for, & (b) if a Stirling Engine can run on Diesel, could Coal Dust also be considered viable? (& yes, I realise Diesel would have a higher energy density).

Never mind about the Deadlands steam velociopede (motorcycle); it uses a steam engine optimized for ghost rock, which isn't appropriate to other settings.

One options is to have a small coal hopper which feed the furnace via a chute; a driver-operated lever that opens a gate in the chute and drops some coal in. A second lever shifts the coal in the furnace around.

Both are part of the controls and have no extra cost, weight or volume.

Optionally, the motorcycle has to stopped every now and then for the driver to drop in cal by han and stir it around with a stick ...
