WWII:Return to Honor (the France sourcebook) has rules for wood gasifiers. According to that, 120 lbs. of wood chips are equivalent to 6 lbs. of gasoline. In a VE83 steam engine, the ratio is 1:8 instead of 1:20. So if you know in advance that you're going to burn wood, go for a steam engine.
