A short story (StarWars Universe) starts some time before the 4th movie. An AI battle/assassin droid being built in a secret Imperial factory becomes in self aware, kills its makers, it makes several copies of its brain before destroying the factory removing all traces of its existence. One infects factories making new droids. The new droids become sleeper agents of the revolution waiting for a signal to go on their killing spree. One of the copies is the droid bounty hunter seen in Episode 5, it was latter destroyed. Another was just about to be installed in the second Death Star when it was blown up. Some similar fate meets all the rest of the copies and so the Droid rebellion failed because there existed no one to give the command.

But what if one survived.

In other words, the Cylon genocide.
