There is the Field Remote Expeditionary Device (F.R.E.D.), which is the cargo transport, and multiple versions of Mobile All-Terrain Laboratory Platform (M.A.L.P.) on of which is wheeled, and another is supposedly a flier (I have not seen either because I missed a lot of the episodes when it went from Fox to SyFy Channel. It seems from what I have seen of the FRED, it is based on one version of the DARPA MULE UCV contest.
I am trying to find more information on the vehicles used but so far the above from Wikipedia is about all I have found. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Onno Meyer Sent: Saturday, September 28, 2013 4:05 AM To: The GURPSnet mailing list Subject: Re: [gurps] Gate Vehicles I'm trying to recall the human vehicles from the Stargate setting. First the little ones: * Remote/robotic ground vehicles with sensors to check the environment before humans go in. * Similar vehicles as cargo transport. * Remote/robotic air vehicles, launched through the gate. All very much in support of leg infantry recon teams, not party transport vehicles in their own right. * They once transported a submarine through the gate. * Didn't they have construction equipment on the various Alpha Sites? Again no widespread, systematic use of vehicles. * X-302/F-302 starfighters. * X-303/BC-303 starships. * Puddle Jumpers (not human-made, but many were salvaged by humans). The starships are used in adventures, either transporting the heroes to other planets or as the stage for 'bottled' episodes on the ship. The Goa'uld and Jaffa don't seem to have a truly industrial society. There are plenty of technical artefacts, there are some mines and workshops, but we don't see much in the way of factories, right? Even when the Ori started to build their invasion fleet, the camera did a pan across a valley with ship frames in pits. The humans obviously have industry, but during the early seasons the secrecy around the Stargate program keeps it from being decisive. When SG-1 needs reinforcement, why do they get another SG team, and not an airborne division? The lack of roads on many planets is a problem, of course. Are wheeled ground vehicles an option? Should they be tracked instead, or are tracked off-road vehicles doomed without wheeled, road-bound supply? Could TL8 or TL9 make tracked trucks viable? The other option is to fly. Send bulldozers through the gate to clear a landing field, then helicopters with folding rotors, airlift fuel and supplies to forward landing sites. But you can't support major bases by air. So what are the options? - A little starship, TL11 or TL12, with room for a party of adventurers and their equipment. The starships may be FTL-capable, but the gates in the setting mean that it is relatively small with relatively low endurance. No weeks or months in hyperspace, usually. - A TL8 or TL9 all-terrain vehicle, tracked or wheeled, which is designed to fit trough the gate. Possibly with variants for breathable and unbreathable atmospheres. How is that different from Traveller ATVs? Only in size? - A TL8 or TL9 helicopter with sensors, weapons, plus room for a team. - A family of compact engineering vehicles to build roads. Small enough for the gate, or small enough to fit into a helicopter which fits through the gate? Compare my recent TL13 space marine force, with support vehicles which fit into the dropship. Regards, Onno PS - Mike, please don't cross-post this to other lists. _______________________________________________ GurpsNet-L mailing list <[email protected]> http://mail.sjgames.com/mailman/listinfo/gurpsnet-l
