A stargate-like operation wouldn't need surplus gear for budget
reasons. Perhaps for secrecy, but how hard would it be to order
some modern vehicles and say "top secret, national security"?

Say I want a vehicle which can be sent through a gate, carried
through corridors and stairs of a gate building or gate temple
in marginally man-portable chunks, and assembled outside. With
this modular construction, it would also be possible to carry
the vehicle modules in a small utility shuttle, so the design
is not just limited to settings with constricting gates.

The rules for modular vehicles can be found in VXi6. A SM+4
vehicle in ten modules would require just 0.4 man-hours to
assemble, but it also needs "an actual machine shop or vehicle
assembly yard" due to the size. That probably means what 3E UT
calls a portable shop, and what VE calls a mini-workshop. Even
if you assume that the shop can be transported in sections
without trouble, that means a lot of tools. 3,000 lbs. and 5
cubic yards. It feels as if the Vehicles Expansion rules got
the time and tools wrong -- too little time, too many tools.

I'm thinking about a two-tracked, 400-cf vehicle with four
seats, 2,000 lbs. empty weight (ten sections averaging 200
lbs.) and 4,000 lbs. loaded weight. There would be room for
four passengers, a typical party of PCs.

But perhaps it should be larger, 800 cf and seats for six to
eight people. The team and a few trusty local guides or
damsels in distress.

Regards,
Onno
