To distract myself from the evening news -- is it time to start betting against the US credit rating? -- I've put the finishing touches on the tracked gate vehicle and started thinking about a modular flyer.
A modular helicopter? Something the size of an OH-58, but the rotors come off, and the rotor head, and the tail, and the skids, and the engine, and the remaining lightweight shell comes apart in three or four sections. The problem: each rotor blade will be 16' or so and modular blades sound iffy. Also, helicopters will deal badly with alien worlds with lower air pressure. A STOL plane like the PC-6 Porter? The wingspan is even larger, but perhaps the wings could come in sections which will bolt together. But if the area around the stargate is abandoned, they'll have to start by clearing an airstrip, and finding landing spots elsewhere will be tricky. A floatplane? An autogyro? Any toughts?
