At TL7 size might matter, but by TL  you may be able to pair gas
turbines on something as small as a tank.

A tank engine can't be maintained from inside the tank.

Why would that be an issue in this case?

My "size matters" comment. I wondered if the ability to walk
around the engine and do maintenance at sea made complicated
drivetrains more feasible for big ships than for small tanks.

Historically speaking, TL6 or TL7 tanks with multiple engines
had usually problems, while ships with multiple engines could
work (even if complex gears made maintenance problems). Does
an increase in tech levels mean that smaller multiple engines
get feasible at higher TLs, or does it take more access space
and constant maintenance to make it possible?

An other difference is between land and sea vessels. I suppose with land vehicles you will way more often have a situation, where you momentaritly put much stress on drivetrain and engine, because of a terrain feature, while sea vessels likely have less peaks of stress.
