I'm sure there's something I'm missing here, but with both the manual
and tutorials included as audio on the CD, what is the need for extra
training? Or is it mainly intended for those new to Window-eyes? Grant
it, I've been using Window-eyes since the days of 2.1 and 3.1.

Subject: jammed up with jaws
Cheree Heppe here:
When I relocated to Portland, Oregon last August, one of the people
in one of the disability agencies, maybe it was at the Oregon
Commission or at Independent Living Resources suggested I get a JAWS
evaluation. The person strongly implied JAWS served best for any
serious job seeker or workplace situation.
However, I had vastly different experiences. Even at the IRS
training for blind candidates jobbed out to the Arkansas Lions World
Center or whatever they're calling that place these days, the Jaws
barely did it. There was constant interference with the JAWS program
and constant need for work arounds, usually designed and assisted by
the sighted, so the blind could do whatever job the blind do.
The Jaws evaluation took place at Independent Living Resources. I
brought my laptop to see how the programs did in a side-by-side
comparison. In what we did, E-mail, website surfing, document
processing, Window-Eyes did at least as well as Jaws and in many
ways, worked much more seamlessly and stayed in the background, like
a well-behaved screen reader ought to do. The upshot was I decided I
didn't need the JAWS training. Subsequently, someone from the Oregon
Commission wrote a letter decrying my non-conversion to the Jaws
platform, along with other case-related nonsense.
I have been blessed to have found a number of good jobs myself.
Since my acquisition of Window-Eyes, the Windows access has been
mostly Windows based without a lot of additional over-the-top, extra
commands that the screen reader has to be invoked about, just to get
the job done.
The Window-Eyes training happening tomorrow in Portland should be a
very good enhancement for those having access to it. I have a part
time job now and am looking for a full time one, but the Commission
maneuvers its clients into positions of disability and because of
this stance, I am not going to be able to take advantage of the
Window-Eyes hands-on training in my home town. I offered to pay
$250.00 over two months to GW Micro in payment for the training. This
was not mad money. I guarantee you my daughter and I could use the
funds for necessities, but then, who defines necessities? The party
I spoke with at GW Micro suggested I charge the whole thing on a
credit card instead.
Regards,
Cheree Heppe

I have also been watching the thread about these same issues and I
haven't
loaded my CD yet either. The one thing that I have been noticing is
that the
people that uninstalled WinEyes before loading the new version 7
have not
been having any of the same problems but I could be wrong about
everyone
that has done this. I would appreciate if anyone knows this for sure
to let
us know. Thanks, Craig B. Richcreek

Subject: I'm scared
I received a CD of 7.0 yesterday and I am scared to death! I don't
know
whether or not I should install it because of all the posts about
losing
speech and needing to reboot. I suppose I could try it in one of
my PCs
and see what it's like. Should I wait until the issue of speech
loss is
resolved? I have a braille display so I would have braille if speech
failed, providing WE is still running. What are your comments?
