My thanks to Lloyd for reminding us that Window-Eyes provides hot keys (undefined by default) for toggling speech off and on, either globally or in the current application. I had been using the Speech Mode Toggle script, forgetting that the feature is already available. The script on my machine has fallen over recently, so this is excellent timing.
