That speech toggle, which Lloyd mentions, is a most invaluable capability.  
I've used it for years on a regular basis.
Personally, for whatever reason, I've chosen alt+e for this hotkey though 
others may not view this as ideal given that alt+e in many programs brings 
up the edit menu.
Whatever key works for you, this is great so, for example, when listening 
to a sermon, talk show, or ball game, WE doesn't suddenly interrupt with 
its wordage of other things happening on the screen.
Of course, a 2nd hit turns it back on; and this works just as nicely with 
external speech synthesizers such as the TripleTalk family (which is what 
I use) as with software speech.
