Hi All,

I took a break after all the problems I had trying to get Window-Eyes
re-installed over the weekend and tackled the project again this afternoon.
The procedure went well this time and I have the appropriate number of items in
the apps menu instead of only 2 as in the previous one. WE allowed me to
uncheck both boxes for it not to load at startup. I haven't re-booted, but, so
far, everything looks good.

I may have an idea what led to the previous very strange behavior in which the
installation seemed to have a mind of its own. I'm running XP Home and
there's a lengthily time between pressing "s" to go with install with speech
and when the installation says the computer must be re-started for the
installation to continue. I can't remember if Stephen used digital editing at
this part during the tutorial so we wouldn't have to wait for what seemed like
several minutes or talked during it, but, I think the last time I may have
given up on speech returning and resorted to the Control-Shift B to try to find
out what was happening and it may have led to all sorts of problems. I was
listening to the tutorial during my original installation, but I didn't during
the weekend. Maybe GW Micro could add something to the installation itself
about expecting a lengthily wait.

Hopefully, I can go back to learning the program now.

Thanks again for everyone's help and patience.

Margaret

Hello,

Thank you. One of the problems that I had with this installation was that the
installation was not proceeding normally. I do know about the two check boxes
you spoke of to tell WE not to load at start up, but WE wouldn't allow me to
uncheck both of them before I received that your custom installation is
complete and WE is being installed on your computer message. I think I had
gotten the first of the two boxes unchecked when I got that message. I hadn't
gone through all the options and hadn't clicked on finished or whatever the
last button is to tell WE I had completed all my options.

The problem with trying to use the quick start thing is that for some strange
reason I only have two items in the apps menu. App management and App central
are there, but that's it. I just listened to the part of the tutorial again in
case I was just unfamiliar with the program and maybe the others appeared after
you expanded something in either of the two items that are there.

I do not know what happened during the last installation, but the whole thing
was very strange and not at all the way Stephen demonstrates it on the
tutorial. My original installation went the way he described it. after
exploring the WE control panel, I was later unable to load it when I wanted to
go back in to look at something else. That's why I needed the second
installation. It seems that the second installation somehow got corrupted. I
know the whole thing sounds nuts. Maybe sun spots were especially active that
day. Who knows?

I think that using the emergency uninstall tool on the CD is called for at this
point. Maybe the GW Micro staff can help explain what happened and will have
some ideas.

Well, the re-installation was not a success after all. The first thing I
heard when I booted up this morning was something about Window-Eyes has many
set files from The Tip of the Day. Unfortunately, I still don't know WE
well enough yet to use it for everything and have a version of JAWS
configured to load at startup and I had the original WE installation
configured not to load for anyone at start up. I can't remember where I was
in the custom installation yesterday when I was interrupted by a message
that my custom installation was complete and Window-Eyes would be installed
on my computer. I read an old post I had saved about a problem someone else
had with the custom installation. My problem seems much more bizarre, but
it seems that there might be a bug with 7.5.1 and the custom installation.

I guess I can try bringing up the Quick Startup and see if I can get things
straightened out that way.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Re-installation Nightmare Re: Uninstalling WE 7.5.1

Thanks to everyone who helped me get Window-Eyes uninstalled That part went
just about without a hitch. Re-installing was a nightmare. I got to the
part about press "s" or enter for talking installation and it said please
wait and speech never resumed. The same thing happened when I was finally
able to restart the computer and I loaded JAWS to see if I could find out
what was going on. I was able to click on whatever WE wanted next and the
install proceeded, but not normally. I had unloaded JAWS and there were
times when the install didn't talk and I had to do a
Control -Shift B and click on the appropriate button. I needed to do a
custom install and I was very glad I already knew some basic WE commands
since this installation was possessed! Speech and focus were both
inconsistent and it made no sense. I performed the original installation
myself and it went the way it is described on the tutorial. I think I got
to where do you want WE to go and got the message about your custom install
is being put on your computer. I hadn't finished and I don't know if WE
decided that since that was what I wanted last time to just do the same
thing again. I tried to cancel, but it was another time I had to call on
Control-Shift B and I wasn't in time.

The Control Panel will at least load now. I haven't gotten everything I had
configured re-done and am hoping this very strange
installation was successful.

Hello All,

I've somehow totally messed up Window-Eyes. It loads, but, among other
problems, the Control Panel won't load. I'm not finding an uninstall option
under Programs in XP Home with SP3. Do you uninstall it in add and remove
programs in control panel in My Desktop or is there another way you are
supposed to use?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
