In my opinion, GW Micro does a very good job with the upgrade system they have in place. I like the fact that when they do have a significant upgrade the cost is not unreasonable when compared with the specialized software market. They don't have an annual upgrade just for the sake of putting out an upgrade.
Yes there are alternatives out there, but in my experience those companies that offer a life time of free updates have done very little to improve their products. And there are several examples out there. Another important aspect not to be overlooked is that my copy of Window-eyes works on all flavours of XP and Windows 7. I don't have to pay more to have it run on the pro editions. Another good thing is that I don't need to pay for a specific copy optimized to run on an Atom processor.
