Hello Don. Further to my last message, I see in my original note that
I did say to use space-5-6 to choose the heading level. This is my
mistake as I meant to just say dots-5-6, no space involved.
Also, we will be looking into the bit of the voice still speaking even
if you have the Voice Sense voice set to off. I think the reason it
currently works this way is due to the fact that the Voice Sense voice
is controlled separately than the DAISY voice.

Anyway, I can get the book loaded and playing just fine, but the
space dots 5-6 and space dots 2-3 don't seem to change the level of
the heading. They seem to either take me to the last heading or the
first depending on which set I hit with space dots 5-6 taking me to

the trying to read this paper very confusing. I was able to locate
the heading "travel" which I think is the first one, but could never
locate any of the other sections in the paper.
Unless I'm missing something very very basic, this thing is just
about impossible to use if you don't simply want to read the paper
straight through from beginning to end, and being able to navigate is
the whole point of daisy.
On one other note, I have a syncbraille and really would like to read
the paper in braille if I can ever get the player to work. But, even
if you have voice turned off, when you attempt to move around in the
paper, the daisy voice starts reading immediately.
In my opinion, if you have speech turned off, the daisy voice should
not read since this is text daisy and not audio daisy.
If you're reading text daisy as is the case with bookshare and nfb
newsline, the user should be able to control whether the output will
be spoken by the notetaker voice or displayed in braille or both.
This doesn't currently seem possible at all.
Am I on target here or am I missing something incredibly obvious.
I'd really appreciate opinions and observations from others on the
list who are using or trying to use the daisy player.
Raul, if you can give me the name of an nfb paper which does read as
you suggest it should, I'd be more than happy to get it and try it
here.

Part of the problem with daisy in general is that there does not
seem to be a standard upon to base players on. If you look around at
different software which plays daisy, you will find that it's as if
each one does it in their own way. While daisy might be fine and
dandy, it's far from being standard.
Now as far as the daisy formatted newsline papers, about the only
annoyance I've seen and this is marked down to look into for the
future, is the fact that when you go to each new news article, you
don't hear it's titl unless you do it via the space-2 or space-5
command. When you do it this way, you hear it in the regular Voice
Sense voice instead of the DAISY voice which is controlled
separately. other than that all you have to do is press space-2-3 or
space-5-6 to choose the heading level to move by, heading 2 for each
major section of the paper, sports, news, metro, life, etc. and then
heading 3 for each article. Once you choose the heading level with
those keys, you choose each article to move to or rather each
heading by pressing dot-2 or dot-5 to move backward or forward.
So what I do is press space-5-6 until it says heading 3. Then I
press dot-5 to move forward amongst the heading 3 which are the
articles. I personally feel the keys should be changed to be similar
to the media player, meaning dot-2 and dot-5 to choose the heading
to move by and even choose the index to move by meaning , heading
1, heading 2, heading 3, phrase, page, etc, then dot-1 and dot-4 to
make the actual move. If HIMS likes this approach, it will make it
more uniform and easier to explain.

of the daisy player in my Voicesense. Personally, I find it almost

The daisy player is the one area of the vs which really needs
serious work sooner rather than later.

and really would prefer reading the nfb papers in braille as

Sorry to be so negative about this, as it really is the only area
of the sense notetakers with which I actually find fault.

The other day I registered to join the free newspaper and magazine
service from NFB called NFB Newsline. You can read local and
national newspapers, and some magazines via your touch tone phone.
They also provide a service that they can e-mail the newspapers
and magazines that you want to read to your e-mail in Daisy format
as well. When I was signing up for the newspaper delivery to my
e-mail, I had difficulty registering for it online. So I
contacted a customer service person at NFB Newsline. He asked me
where I'd primarly read the newspapers. I said on my notetaker
the Braille Sense, my Victor reader stream, and my desk top PC.
The customer service person contacted me back and said "we heard
that the newspapers don't download well and work well on the
Braille Sense notetakers." Does anyone know if this is true or
not? Has anyone tried reading newspapers from Nfb Newsline on
their Sense notetakers? If so, did they download, open well, and
read well in the Daisy player? When I first received my Braille
Sense I tried to download and open Bookshare books in Daisy format
in the Daisy player of the Braille Sense. It didn't work well at
all. So I learned just to download and open the BRF files when I
download, open, and unpack books from Bookshare. I have upgraded
my Braille Sense to version 5.0, but I haven't updated to the
latest version, because I don't want to mess with the Bata form.
I want to wait for the stable permanent latest version, and that
might be ready to download by now. Right now I have a loaner
Braille Sense, because mine is being repaired because some of the
pins got bent in the wireless card slot. So until it returns
repaired to me, I don't want to download a lot of things on to the
loaner Braille Sense.
Thanks for putting up with my long-winded explanation and
questions. I look forward into hearing people's responses to my
question.
