I usually try to not get involved in these debates and political issues but I
actually want to chime in on this one. Tony, self appointed or not, is the
president of the North Raleigh Gyros. He along with a handful of other members
organize, manage and keep the club and race team up and going. They privatized
the club to an extent by collecting a small yearly dues of $10 but the club is
still open for any and all to join. For someone from Greensboro (I think
that's where you're from Dave), there probably isn't a lot of value in that $10
for you other than getting to hear about what is going on in the Raleigh
cycling community. For everyone in the Triangle area, this seems like a really
small amount to pay to stay in touch with a great group of riders.
With more than 125 members, a cycling team and for a club that seems to be
increasing their presence and contributions to the community, I see no problem
with the route the Gyros have taken. There will always be some who are left
out or the path chosen does not please. I feel badly for them but no matter
what route is chosen, there will be someone who is not happy. Hopefully as the
club continues to grow, we can find ways to get these left out few back in to
good grace with the club.
And not to sound like a jerk, that is not my intention... but if the Gyros
direction is not to anyone's liking, they are more than free to do as Tony did
years ago and start their own club with their own Google Group and have their
own member list to manage how they see fit. I'm sure once you've been around
as long as Tony and the Gyros have, you'll see that more management, club dues
and structure are a necessary evil to keep the masses happy sometimes at the
expense of a few.
Cheers and safe riding,-kyle

It's unfortunate for the club that they got forced in this direction.

There was absolutely nothing to be gained. You've split the cycling community
so a self-appointed president can have insurance, and waivers and a race team.
You've even managed to privatize or remove the "trek rides". Good job with that.

I live in Myrtle Beach, but while dating my wife, who lived in Raleigh, I did a
fair amount of riding with the Gyro's. I was always impressed by their
welcoming nature and good, well-organized rides. It seems things have changed.
Careful that you don't collapse under the weight of your own self-importance.
