Winterlight,
Jeez! Put me on the spot! OK.
First, if you have gotten 40 months and 1812 pages from your OKI, I'd
thing you are doing something correct. Whatever it is. And, it says that
OKI did a good job on their supplies. Certainly OKI has not made all
the money OKI's bean-counter's used to justify OKI building and selling
you your printer! You are so much money ahead ATM be very happy!
Second, I see no reason your OKI will not easily go another 40 months
and another 1812 pages (or more).
Third, I believe that your OKI printer and my Brother printer are, and
were developed, built, and sold as "throw-away" machines. They are
platforms to sell supplies (toner carts. and drum modules). Yes, my
belief. Period.
Forth, If you have had no noticeable trouble yet from your OKI by now,
you have passed the infant mortality period. You printer should run to
its' EOL (end of life) without trouble. I have no clue what an OKI's EOL
is, just as I have no clue what my Brother's EOL may be. I promise to
find out what Brothers' is, however.......... :)
I figure this will be dictated when drum modules and toner carts are no
long made/sold! But then, I expect that the 3d Party crowd will allow
me even more time.... if I still have the printer........ :)
I am not that familiar with the specific internals of your OKI. I PM my
Brother about every 9-12 months. This PM is mostly just opening all the
User available panels discussed in the UM and using my PC vacuum tools
to clean up paper dust and whatever else I see/find. Yes, I remove the
toner cart. and the drum module. Then, I do the "clean the
corotron/scorotron wire" process. Lastly, I check the seals on the toner
cart. (if present) at the mating points to the drum. Done.
Other than a hard failure of the main drive motor or the electronics
board(s), I do not yet seen anything that could be suspicious enough to
keep an eye on.
So far, I have seen nothing strange in 57 months and 6753 prints. I am
on my 2d full toner cart. (well, 3d w/the teaser). The "teaser" cart.
lasted ~1600 prints; mostly because I jacked with it to the bitter end!
My Brother tells me I have 6759 prints left on its' original drum
module. This is based on Brother's "plan" of ~12K prints.
Lastly, I have avoided a "strongly suggested" (by Brother) F/W upgrade
to my printer. I fully comprehend what Brother tells me about this
update. But, I do harbor some suspicion that part of this F/W update
will just reduce the internal "life" values of the supply FRUs so I buy
supplies more often! Just me possibly; but............ it seems
plausible!) I do have experience with this kind of manipulation.
Best,
Duncan
P.S. I do now notice that my Brother 2070N (wired network server)
printer has been superceded/replaced by the model 2170N (WIFI network
server)! Another tell that the "industry" wants my home WIFI and not
wired LAN. Right! LOL! Not likely in my lifetime.......... :)
No harm, no foul to all of you that accept, use, depend, and like WIFI.
Just different strokes for different folks!

Buy a test replacement and try it. If you get acceptable print
quality, then buy yourself some storage stock! As long as you store
it in a cool, dry place, it should last forever........ :)

I guess I will stay with Okidata toner, if the fuser went out I would
end up having to buy a new one as the cost of toner and a fuser would be
prohibitive. But I have had this for 40 months and it has been trouble
free so it is worth it to me to get another 40 months out of it
Duncan, I have the original toner in it and in 40 months I have only
printed 1812 pages. It works fine but is there any other maintenance I
should think about doing ... just because of the time that has passed
rather then the page count?
