Work gives me $2k every 3 years for a laptop so I have a definite budget. My roommate got this one earlier this year right when I got my Acer: http://www.amazon.com/G73SW-A1-Republic-Gamers-17-3-Inch-Gaming/dp/B004I1J864/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1323689351&sr=8-2 and it seems pretty good, but I'm sure there's better stuff out there now (or coming soon)?

The link you included pointed to an ASUS laptop (not an ACER); the ASUS G73SW-A1 Republic of Gamers 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black).

It looks like a dynamite machine.

A few years ago ASUS was one of the best (if not the best) in terms of reliability. There's not much more you can add on to this laptop, but the Amazon page you linked to had a few more configurations (under $2k) - better video, larger HD, improved sound.
About the only thing I can see adding on to this laptop is possibly and SSD.
I wouldn't hesitate to get this machine - a good value for the money.

Regards,
Mike
