I, too, am a retired librarian (whose official career ended because my position was eliminated). I remember a high school student came into my school library with a request. She needed a novel and related nonfiction (to determine the realism of the fictional portrayal of the subject) for a term paper on the theme of prejudice. The student said she went to the public library, and the librarian told her it was a stupid topic. Even if I did not approve of the subject, it would be unthinkable to voice my opinion to a patron or anyone else. It is disturbing to discover that bad apples exist in our service-oriented profession.
