I found that you can put plexiglass or some other thin sturdy material
on either side of the foam and bolt through it from side to side, and
that makes a sturdy mounting surface for all sorts of things. You
could also use some contact cement for good measure.

If you did a patch of that on the door and on the frame next to it,
and then put a little wood or something in between on the edges, you
could even install a proper door knob.
