Hi all, just another idea

The first thing I did was cut the edges of my door on a bevel so it only opens
one way (outwards). Then creating a latch was more simple. Imagine the flag on
top of a mailbox, but instead of a flag, just some flat stick like thing. A
paint stick is good. I used a scrap piece of plastic, about 2"x5"x1/4 thick.
The
latch is on the inside of the door near the edge, and the door opens only
outwards, so when the latch is vertical, the door opens. When it is flipped
down
horizontal, it crosses the jamb and secures the door from opening.

To make it operational from both sides of the door, I put a 1" hole through the
door 2" back from the edge half way up, then used a 1" wood dowel through that,
with two door knobs affixed to each end, and the latch stick trapped between
the
inner door knob and the door face. ie, imagining the assembly in cross section
from the inside, you have doorknob, affixed to latch, affixed to dowel, through
hole in door affixed to doorknob. It worked like a charm. It is ideal to make
this assembly in a way that it can be removed from the door and re-assembled on
site to make yurt transport easier. I won't get into the details on how I did
this unless someone wants to know, because it was tricky and took some
inventiveness.

Using my imagination and your description, are you suggesting taping a couple
of
sticks vertically on the door, such that another stick can slide horizontally
beneath them? Then there's another stick taped vertically to the door frame so
the end of the sliding stick is trapped beneath it?
Then the same thing on the inside?

That would work fine as long as only one person is going in and out. If there
are two people, one inside and one outside, then either the outside person
can't
get in or the inside person can't get out without the other person undoing the
latch.
