Using my imagination and your description, are you suggesting taping a couple of sticks vertically on the door, such that another stick can slide horizontally beneath them? Then there's another stick taped vertically to the door frame so the end of the sliding stick is trapped beneath it? Then the same thing on the inside?
That would work fine as long as only one person is going in and out. If there are two people, one inside and one outside, then either the outside person can't get in or the inside person can't get out without the other person undoing the latch.
