Arle,

Another option might be to go more like a Savoyard (French wandering peasant). Check out the patterns at: http://www.folkwear.com/ There is a really nice cheesemaker's shirt. The sleeves are rather flowing and may require "tying up" to keep them off the trompette and the mouch. It would be a really comfortable costume.

They also have a nice Hungarian coat.

What period are you looking at? I have a lot of costuming books. I mostly do Medieval costumes.

I'm hoping for some suggestions of what sort of costuming might go well with a more or less French folk HG. Every year in October I participate in a local program in Bloomington, Indiana called the Ghost Walk and go playing my gurdy to accompany processions of students and other people around to see supposedly haunted sites. The past three years I have gone as a monk, but this year I am looking for something different. I would like whatever I find to be something that would also work well for busking, perhaps something "old looking" to people.

As a note, I do NOT want to be dressed as a jester, particularly not in one of those ridiculous polyester jobs in dayglo colors that you can find everywhere.

I should also mention that I am more interested in patterns than in any pre-made costume, since anything worth having for use as a busker and for processions will really need to be custom made. If anyone has any suggestions for what might work well, please let me know. (Also, since my name does not reveal my gender, I am male, so recommendations for "merry wench" or "peasant lassie" outfits would not help me.)

Best,

Arle
