Thanks all for the suggestions. In response to questions:
1. I am not really interested in a period. What I need is something fun that people would vaguely associate with the past, something that would fit their ideas of an old instrument. In that sense, I am not interested in period correct or a specific time frame (although I am not opposed to that either, should something suitable turn up).
2. I like some of the patterns Henry pointed to, but they are perhaps a little more "placeable" than what I have in mind: they can be associated with a particular place and time.
I like the Savoyard idea, because it seems that it would be simple enough to not look like I'm necessarily a reenactor and have people wondering why I'm playing non-French music on my instrument.
The responses so far give me some ideas. I'd probably need to find something somewhat warm, as the particular activity I have in mind for this is outdoors at night and is usually a bit on the cold side.
