The French cheesemaker's shirt is a brilliant pattern - I have made it many times over the past 25 (yes, really) years in all sorts of fabrics from fine poly/cotton to heavy calico, and it has worked every time. I even made it much longer and used it as the basis for a nightshirt pattern. I think I have worn one of the shirts whilst playing gurdy and I don't remember having any problems with the sleeves touching the trompette.

Folkwear patterns are really great. I'm about to make myself a Walking Skirt (again, a pattern that I have made up on numerous occasions), for a part in a play in which I am taking part in a few weeks time (The Importance of Being Earnest).

Arle,

Another option might be to go more like a Savoyard (French wandering peasant). Check out the patterns at: http://www.folkwear.com/ There is a really nice cheesemaker's shirt. The sleeves are rather flowing and may require "tying up" to keep them off the trompette and the mouch. It would be a really comfortable costume.
