Hello Pieter

The biggest problem that occurs on my HG's, which are to big, loud
instruments, is the balance between the strings when amplified.
When the drones are too prominent I get a loud, dominant humming drone, if
the dog is too prominent it can be painful.

  I tried the following:

  - miking up with a good microphone on a stand: good sound but still not good
because it nails me to one place on stage

  - Clip-on mike: good sound but I tend to loose the mike, looks silly!

  - Little pick-ups in, for instance, K&K-style: sounds good but here occurs
the balance problem. I tried to solve the problem using 3 separate pick-ups, a
patch-cable between the HG and a pre-amp where the end-mix is made. It gives
full control on the HG-sound (sound technicians tend to do weird things when
amplifying HG's)
Big downside: at least 3 XLR exits in the HG and a big heavy cable.

It is possible to build in the pre-amp but I don't like ugly modern
technology on my beauties.

  Maybe I'm just being difficult,

  Pieter

Do you use one to pick up the chanters and one for the drone's and Dog...

I have just ordered a K&K Big Twin from Germany (it's cheaper there than in
the UK). It's made in the US, you can buy it from
http://www.bluestarmusic.com/. I have tried it in a music shop in London and
worked well, without a preamp. Needs a bit of experimenting with the
placement of the pads, it can be permanently fixed, but not necessary. I
found it interesting that the chap used a thin layer of blue tack to put it
  on and it was OK.
This is by the way a good idea, to talk to a shop and ask them to try things
  out.
