Hello,

I need to replace the D petit bourdon drone on my D/G Phoenix. I notice that the Muskett book calls for a G cello string, approx 1.20 mm, and I also notice that the current (broken) string is steel (or some other metal) wrapped. But I really don't know anything about cello strings, and it seems like some are quite expensive. What is a reasonably priced brand and type of cello string for this application?

first I would send an e-mail request to Helmut Gotschy, maker of your instrument. He will be able to tell you what product he used.

recomandations from makers for the d (thats the D on top of the bass clef):
http://www.kuerschner-saiten.de/ recomends
Metal wound on gut VD Ø 2.40 mm

Metal wound on gut 1.62 mm to Ø 2.29 mm

Alto
Thomastik Dominant 1/8 Cello

(these infos also can be found at http://hurdygurdywiki.a.wiki-site.com/)

I personally would try some viola c, if necessary a long one. Best would be if you find a player or shop that gives you some old strings to try.

Drone strings usually are the most expensive strings on a hurdy gurdy. Prices from 35 to 70 Euro are normal. If you are looking for a cheap alternative You also can try bass strings for “Kontragitarre” (for example by Thomastik) or zither. These strings have a nylon core round-wound with silverplated copper.

kind regards,
