What do they mean by 4/4 vs. 3/4 vs 1/2 vs?1/4 vs. 1/8 size? Which makes sense
for my application?

If you're on a budget, D'Addario Pro-Arte cello strings work fairly well.? They
have a synthetic core with a silver winding (or Tungsten /Silver) which seems
to sound OK without unwanted overtones.? If money is not such an issue, strings
with a gut core do sound a bit 'sweeter'.? I'm not sure how a Phoenix is braced
on the inside, but you might consider going with 'Light' tensioned strings.

Subject: [HG] cello string for D drone

I need to replace the D petit bourdon drone on my D/G Phoenix. I notice that
the Muskett book calls for a G cello string, approx 1.20 mm, and?I also notice
that the current (broken) string is steel (or some other metal) wrapped. But I
really don't know anything about cello strings, and it seems like some are
quite expensive. What is a reasonably priced brand and type of cello string for
this application?

Thanks in advance,
