I don't consider it a bad thing that the notify is gone.
I consider it a [bold]good[/bold] thing.
You wonder why i presume:
Simple, It allows you to make something better, Break out of the mold; make a proper system. You don't rely on death icons? Fine, change the code that does the death icons to print only text; and only the text that you'd normally show in the notify area. What does this provide? a [bold(again)]better system[/bold]. You're no longer limited to 4 messages at a time in one spot, now you can break out of that mold and again, dare i say it, make something thats better and easier to read.
You also now have the advantage to make new join/quit messages. Which, will set you apart from the norm, and what will it do? [bold(dare i bold again)]make something you've done even better than before[/bold]
amazing concept innovation is, even if it's small.
Tip of the day: Don't be negative when something like this changes, look at the positive aspects, and always strive to make something [bold(whaddayaknow)better[/bold]. (this tip goes to all of you out there who choose to harp on the negative aspects of change.)

Well, what if a certain modification didn't rely on death icons? That's true in my case, so being ignorant of the problem doesn't help anyone, smart ass.
Now, this doesn't only apply to death messages. A few other things are gone as well, like the "player has joined the game." messages.
A modification may also use the print notify function for other informative messages, and now those messages are gone. A feature present for years being removed in a new system like Steam can only ask for problems.
This is very upsetting.

inFirst off, for me; with developer 1 set, i always see _one_ entry at the top of the screen in the notify area. and death messages have always worked (you know, the icons that show x killed y with whatever gun). they don't rely on notify at all. sure the text message doesn't show up on-screen, but why does it _need_ to show up onscreen when the icons are there? i mean, seriously.

It matters because it works in WON, and works when developer 1 is enabled
seeSteam. TFC also apparently has lost its death messages in Steam.
That doesn't help at all Omega, and printnotify does work just great. I
ofabsolutely no reason why Valve felt like disabling it just for the hell
better.it if Developer 1 isn't set.
It was also never documented publicly as being "removed" -- that is frustrating in itself.

why does it matter? just make up your own drawing thing that works
needmodifications, thats what i ended up doing, provides a much better effect anyway, print notify never worked properly anyway.

Can I ask why it was removed? It's used in several Half-Life
it seems a bit unreasonable to remove it.

This is a multi-part message in MIME format. -- [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] Sorry, ignore the last message. I hit the wrong key. Damn it.
case HUD_PRINTNOTIFY: psz[0] = 1; // mark this message to go into the notify buffer sprintf( psz+1, msg_text, sstr1, sstr2, sstr3, sstr4 ); ConsolePrint( ConvertCRtoNL( psz ) ); break;
This section of code is now useless. Unless developer 1 is set, Steam will no longer print the message in the upper left corner of the screen. Steam will only print the message into console.
I'm seriously annoyed. I hope this can get fixed.
