TBH I think this we need fps 200 has a good part to play
when people ask why they need so much cpu compared
to CS 1.5. In those days people where happy with the
default fps. Now it seems people are never happy and
go just on ping. I wouldn't be surprised if its to a large
portion a placebo effect. They see a lower ping and hence
say its better. Yes this will be the case to a point 100ms
-> 50ms is definitely better but the diff between 20ms
and 15ms is hardly worth it and in some case will lead
to poorer game play. Why? Well if you have a 50ms ping
a network spike of 5, 10 even 15 is not that noticeable
and even with the best internet connection you will see
these. But if you start with a 15ms ping its quite a jump.
A lot of it is what people are used to. When I go to LAN's
and then come back and play online. I can hit anything
for toffee for a few days as I adjust back.
Anyway back to the point if anything can run a 32 player
server smooth it will be a top end amd64/fx/opteron.
If you plan on running other things on the machine go
for a dual u will see a good benefit from it if not an fx
would give you the best performance could even go
for a fx55 if u got loads of money :)
