It seems to me like SRV record support could just be a one-way simple process
where it resolves to the server and port, and that's it. Why does the server
need to register this information on the master server? I don't see why this is
necessary. The people connecting through the master server are the people using
the browser anyways, so SRV records do not impact them. Ergo a server doesn't
need to register SRV records with a master server. Furthermore, having an srcds
server as a dns authoritative server sounds like a really bad idea.

I suspect the way this could be handled is:

a) Favourites list now stores IPs AND DNS hostnames (including SRV records).
When the player refreshes the hostnames resolve to the host and returns the
status. Connecting also resolves to the current information.

b) Console command usage of DNS could easily be expanded to support SRV
records. Is it really so hard to support tf2j.domain.com -> x.x.x.x:xxxx? It's
been part of the DNS spec for decades.

Black I mean a system for in game that can't be abused, or hacked. I know there
is DNS. It would be much easier to run servers off a steamID, but they are
dynamic for servers, at least I thought.

Another problem with DNS names is how to report to the master server that this
is the unique name?

Another issue is that DNS names aren't port identified, so if you move server
from 27015 to 27016 your clients won't be able to connect.

This has been asked for many times over the past years.

It would be very helpful because it would allow us to move to better hosts and
faster servers without losing 90% of our players due to an IP change. Even for
TF2, quickplay accounts do little to help a migration.

Why would you need to go IP -> name?

And to my understanding the majority of the server browser wouldn't even have
to be recoded, it would just need to store the string rather than the ip, and
then resolve it everytime someone wants the server information. (Correct me if
I'm wrong on this?)

If only someone could invent an ip to name lookup system.........

The biggest problem with sub domains is that one day you could point everyone
to a server based in the USA and the next day point everyone to a server is
Russia.

However, I do agree it would be nice.

The next problem would be how to setup such system.

Okay guys, seriously now. Can we please get SRV record support for srcds? Also,
having favourites saved based on (sub)domain and not just IP?

I think we all want to see this actually addressed. I haven't yet seen a good
reason why these haven't been.
