I'm running VMware ESXi 4.0.0 Build 208167 on some pretty old hardware, (Dual Hyperthreaded 3.2Ghz Xeons and 12Gb of RAM) and I'm not having any problems. Beyond that, I have three instances running. I typically don't have more than 4 people connected at a time, but all of the instances are consuming memory and a little bit of CPU even when they're idle. I can tell you that if you don't have enough memory for a virtual host all of your guests will suffer. Can you provide more details on the physical hardware you're running? What type of chassis, how many NICs and what kind of disc?
