At least the ISC and Nominum DHCP servers automatically delete the dynamic name 
when the lease expires.   I assume Cisco's does as well.  Your point about 
widespread protocol support is a good one—I have a lot of trouble getting 
consistent behavior out of mDNS.   I have no problem getting consistent 
behavior out of DNS.
