I should market a flute cork then.

When this kind of stuff comes up it's always good to go back the P.G.
Wodehouse novels on golf. There is always at least on member of the country
club chasing the gadget that will improve his/her game, exactly when to
start a down swing, etc.

I understand similar stuff appears on the flute listserv.

Indeed. And there are pieces that are composed that require natural notes
and no valves whatsoever.

I think it's okay to try out new gizmos - just learn to be flexible. You
don't give up walking when you buy a car.

Question, aren't there some works that call for "hand stopping" which
require switching from "stopped notes" to "open notes" in way that makes it
hard to use and remove a stopping mute?

I've a lot of sympathy with this attitude, and in fact it is the approach I
take myself. I don't in fact own a stopping mute, non-transposing or
otherwise, and have never felt the need to go out and buy one.

But there are cases when one is needed, for instance if you are using a
single Bb horn and the hand doesn't stop a convenient semitone.
