But there are good fingerings for hand-stopping on the B flat horn.  
Morley-Pegge's book has a handy chart for this purpose.

I've a lot of sympathy with this attitude, and in fact it is the approach I
take myself. I don't in fact own a stopping mute, non-transposing or
otherwise, and have never felt the need to go out and buy one.

But there are cases when one is needed, for instance if you are using a
single Bb horn and the hand doesn't stop a convenient semitone.
