A few times I've stuck a regular mute in instead of stopping a note to see if 
anyone notices when the section plays.

I've never had anyone (including anyone in the section) say anything.

 
I don't have the cajones to try this on a solo stopped section though.

One hornist produces a pleasing sound using a non-transposing stop mute.
Another produces a pleasing sound using a styrofoam coffee cup.
A third does a splendid job using a transposing stop mute.
The fourth accomplishes the same thing using his/her hand.

The director is please with all four.
