Chris, something really misunderstood by Georg Szell & by the American use of
an assistant. In this special
case, the assistant was really too much, as they had doubled the parts anyway.
Why did Szell double the wind
parts special the horns ? He did not like, that they force when playing forte
or fortissimo. He liked the broader
sound if the parts were doubled. He was not alone with this opinion, and it was
a very good idea.
