I couldn't agree more Hans.  I knew that Szell liked to double winds and 
especially with the big orchestra it makes great sense.  Adding the assistant 
seemed silly, but I had to say that I witnessed it!

parts special the horns ? He did not like, that they force when playing forte 
or fortissimo. He liked the broader
sound if the parts were doubled. He was not alone with this opinion, and it was 
a very good idea.
