I worked with youth wind ensemble. The group were superb and quite apart from giving wonderful performances also won some prestigious national competitions.
The director told me that they never tuned up, not even before the competitions, they just played in tune. They were trained to listen and any adjustments were made "on the fly" . They usually played a couple of chords together before they went on, checking balance, feel and, yes, tuning, but the real tuning was done during the performance and was as natural to them as playing the right notes. They were a good group.
