I apologize that I didn't clarify that I tune with the first line E on the Bb side, using valve 2 (not the octave above as most of you assumed). Again, it is my understanding the the first line E on the F side with open valves is about 20 cents flat. However, I observe most amateur horn players tuning this E on the F side with open valves. Maybe this explains why so many amateurs play sharp.
