Hi Mike, Just to add my $0.02 (CAN)...
I've heard that what is underneath laquer is not always what one would expects; ugly seams and different colours of metals. If you go into the list archives (can we still do that?) you'll find quite alot of good information given on this as well as research done to ascertain real world differences in sound quality for laquered and non laquered instruments. I strongly second Lawrence in that I've found that the more I practice, the better my stuffy old "Heinz Sablotny special" sounds.
