Hello and good day! I have toyed with the idea of striping my horn
of its lacquer as well. One of the horns in my college section has an old
Elkhart 8D that has an absolutely beautiful sound and it hasn't had lacquer
on it for years. I feel that the horn produces a more natural, pure tone
quality. Having played in the section and also listening to Matt, the 8D
horn, solo I would say yes to taking the lacquer and fully support that move.
I have a newer 8D that I have removed to plating from the tuning slides.
Another good point for removing the lacquer is weight reduction. A horn like
the 8D, the Holton Merker-Matic and other large bore horns already will have
a darker tone quality due to the massive size of the bore. The weight at that
point has only a minuet effect on sound. So with that said why fight the horn
take the lacquer/plating off if you want it removed.

                          Cheers,

                                                                Corey J.
