If its any consolation I've had the same problem. When the light goes on the outside of the roll holder it means that the fuse is blown inside. Sadly its not a replaceable part so the whole of that side of the holder has to be replaced! I ordered my replacement in November and I'm still waiting, albeit that I have received one wrong part so far. I'm based in the UK so perhaps you will be luckier.
As far as using the holder in the way that people use the pvc pipes with the standard printers I think this is ruled out due to the replacement back section on the 130nr which provides the roll feed. This doesn't work without the power from the roll feed holder so won't accept paper properly. You are therefore left with cutting the paper from rolls and front feeding (which is what I have been doing since November!). This is possible but really slows down the process. It also provides the potential for more fingerprints, etc, so is not, to my mind at least, a workable solution if you are doing any volume of prints. Best of luck.
