Hi Tom, Well, let me start with the 8 or 12 color situation. I think it's a mistake on their part and it should read 12 and not 8. That would be for the Z2100 printer.
Regarding using the internal or an external RIP.......I think it's a matter of choice and what you normally do. A third party RIP solution would generally give you a bit more options in terms of color management, profiling, speed, layout, tiling etc. The reason I use Posterjet is because it's very powerful and at the same time, easy to use. I've been using it since Version 6 and never had an issue. Updates are easy to implement too. It's very straight forward. If you go for a RIP, you want one that does what you want, quickly process files. Posterjet can take 200 different file formats and process them. Using the layout options are very easy. Positioning a number of smaller jobs on a wide roll can be easily done. Repositioning I call it. You can drag and drop files into the queue. It has logic seeking, meaning the carriage goes over the media only at places where it needs to lay ink. You know what? Have a look at www.posterjet.com and grab a demo. Give it a run. I'm not saying the others are not good, just that I've found Posterjet to be powerful and easy to use and it's accurate. E-Z and fool-proof, so as you put it. And in the unlikely situation that you should come across an issue with the software, they are really fast with support. Can't say that about other RIPs. So if time is a factor, 7 seconds to print seems fast enough for me.
