Hi Tom, Yes, you're right, the Design PS version is the one you would be looking at, to start with.
Being a perfectionist, you would want to have the best system. The onboard RIP is indeed a simple option, but I wouldn't say a simpler one, per se. There are more options with the PosterJet RIP and sometimes, when you need the processing power of the PC, you can use that instead. I think now you've asked for the demo version to try, that should give you a good idea of how it works. Linearization is to make a line linear which is not. In the case of the printers, you could say that what you put in, as in ink information, is what you want to come out. So let's say you have in a file 10% of cyan, you want the printer to print 10% of cyan. Unless of course you want to have less or more, that's ok too. But sometimes, due to various factors, like drop volume, temp etc, you want to tweak the system a bit to make sure you get what you want. That's called linearizing. The HP printers do this as well. Here it's called calibration, but the principle is similar. A pattern is printed and then measured. The density that is and this is then compared to what it's supposed to be. If there's a difference, then a compensation is added or removed to come to a linear curve. Hope this helps. Looks like I'd need the Design "PS" version that is costing upwards of $1300.00 that would work with my 2500CP or the Z3100 44" model. Being a perfectionist, I'm intrigued by the possibilities (many of which I imagine are yet to be implemented with such new hardware), but being practical also, I'm attracted to the simplicity of the onboard HP RIP.
